Resilience is the quality that allows some people to be knocked around – and sometimes even knocked down – by life and come back stronger than ever. Resilient people are not defined by their adversity. They move through the pain and grief by moving towards a goal beyond themselves; by believing that the bad times are only a temporary state

Resilience is a variety of skills that we can learn and strengthen:

  • Make Connections: When we try and carry the load of stress on our own, it can often seem unbearable. Knowing someone is on your side can help immensely.
  • Be Optimistic and Keep a Goal Mindset: It’s very important to see the world clearly but also to believe in your abilities. Focus on those things that you can change or where you can make a difference
  • Maintain Whole Self Fitness: This means physical fitness, but also mental, spiritual and emotional. Keeping your brain strong is important because resilient people are continually learning, growing and adapting to new information
  • Look for Opportunities for Self-Discovery: Make sure you take time for yourself – journal, pay attention to your thoughts and feelings, find and practice activities that you enjoy and find relaxing

Being resilient does not mean that a person doesn’t experience difficulty or distress. In fact, building resilience is likely to involve a considerable amount of emotional distress. However, it is also an important part of growth and change.
