Our stories don’t define us, they define who we used to be.  They lay the framework for the transformations we’ve experienced – and those still to come.  When we take a label from the past – usually one we don’t want to have attached to our identity – we say, this is who I was, how I related to the world at one time, but no longer, because I learned something from this experience.  Something about who I no longer wanted to be, but even more so, I learned who I wanted to become.

  • Everyone has a story – something that really is a treasure waiting for someone else to hear.
  • Sometimes when we think about sharing our story, we worry about playing the victim.
  • We all search for value, purpose and meaning in our lives and our experiences. We wrestle with the “Why me?”, “Why This?”, Why Now?” questions and wonder what the greater purpose is.

It could be just one other person that needs to hear it, or it could be many. But the point is that what you’ve been through, what you’ve learned, can help someone else.

Episode Quotes:

“In my life, the stories I have heard from my family, my friends, my community and from willing strangers all over the world have been the true source of my education.” – Holly Near

“We all have a story. The difference is: Do you use the story to empower yourself? Or do you use your story to keep yourself a victim? The question itself empowers you to change your life.” – Sunny Dawn Johnston
